Students Successfully Participated in the Water Rocket Competition in Japan

The Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) was established in 1993 to enhance space activities in the Asia-Pacific region. Space agencies, governmental bodies, and international organizations, such as the United Nations, as well as companies, universities and research institutes from over 30 regional participants take part in APRSAF, the largest space-related conference in the Asia-Pacific region. The forum also wants to encourage young scientists for space activities and rocket science. Therefore, every year water rocket competition is organized by the forum. Students are given opportunity to improve their engineering skills and creativity by designing a water rocket. Students are expected to hit the target of 80 meters away from the launching area. The student that gets closest distance to the target wins the competition. They need to consider wind speed, amount of pressure, amount of water, angle and direction of the rocket when they are launching. Therefore, they need to have very high engineering skills.

This year Horizon International Schools participated in this competition for the first time with six students. Before going there, the team had prepared for the competition for one month. Students learned about rocket science and built many rockets till the competition. On every Saturday and Sunday they tested their rockets on the field. Thanks to the students’ hard-work before the competition, one of Horizon students, Aung Thu got the 4th place out of 70 students. Although there was an unpredictable wind which was changing its direction every second, he succeeded to get the distance of 2.63 meters close to the target. We congratulate him on his remarkable performance and hard work.

Besides the competition, our students had a chance to observe Japanese culture during their four-day stay. They also had an opportunity to examine the technology of the future and humanoid robots in Miraikan technology center.
